The IMF should pressure Sri Lanka to leave the Tamils and their land alone: Tamils for Biden

The Tamil diaspora kindly asks the IMF to only make the loan to Sri Lanka with the following two conditions:

1. Disarm the Sinhalese army as was done to the military in Bosnia, and ask it to leave from the Tamils’ north-east.

2. Have a meaningful discussion to protect the Tamils from Sri Lankan oppression. This protection can come about only through a political solution decided by a UN-monitored referendum.

Before the IMF considers a financial resolution to the Sri Lankan economic crisis, it should take into account the root cause of this crisis.

The root cause was Sri Lanka’s attempted Sinhalization and Buddhization of the Hindu and Christian Tamils of the North-east. Before the European colonization of the island, the North-east was a sovereign kingdom. It has a long tradition of autonomy and its independent spirit runs deep.

After the British left in 1948, Sinhalese politicians took advantage of the situation by oppressing Tamils politically as well as financially.

No one among the Sinhalese for the last 74 years questioned Sri Lankan defense expenses. This is because the Sinhalese whole-heartedly supported the war that oppressed the Tamils, so that North-east, the Tamils’ homeland could be exploited and Sinhalized.

All of the past governments of Sri Lanka and the Sinhalese public were therefore responsible for this economic crisis. It is their legacy and curse.

If the IMF provides a loan of $5 billion US dollars or other debt relief to the country, it will never solve the problem. As long as the Tamils’ political freedom is suppressed, Sri Lanka will go through continuing economic crises.

Even during this time of food and fuel shortages in Sri Lanka, Sinhalese Buddhist priests with the help of the military captured the Tamil Hindu temple at Krunthur Malai in the Tamil homeland; they threw away the sacred Hindu god statue and replaced it with their own Buddhist symbol. Against a court order, Sri Lanka is now building a Buddhist temple, which shows that there is no law and order for Sinhalese that can prevent the ceaseless oppression of the Tamil people and their culture.

Even as the Sinhalese Buddhist monks beg for food, the land grabbing of Kurunthur Malai by the Sinhalese persists. The Sinhalese mode of operation is that illegally seized land is defended by Sinhalese Sri Lankan army, and the Tamils are forced to move out of their own homes through military threat. It is ethnic cleansing and also genocide.

This is another way the Tamils have been oppressed for the last 74 years: Sri Lanka seizes further land in the name of the Mahaweli Authority under the guise of development and sustainability, and does the same through the Department of Archeology under the guise of archaeological protection, the Forest Department under the guise of forest conservation, and the Department of Wildlife under the guise of wildlife conservation.

These department heads are nominated by the Sri Lankan president and controlled by the Sinhalese establishment. The departments are a tool used to steal the Tamils’ land, and eventually the Sinhalese will be brought from the south to settle in the seized territories.

Another tactic Sri Lanka employs in the name of the guise of archaeological protection is to claim that the remains of many Hindu temples, which have decayed in the course of time, are actually ancient sites containing Buddhist relics, and then Buddhist temples are erected in their place. Taking in the name of religion the lands of Hindu Tamils, who have traditionally lived in these areas, is a heinous act.

The Sinhalese during the ethnic war killed over 145,000 Tamils, raped many thousands of Tamil youths, made 90,000 widows, 50,000 orphans, and conducted over 25,000 enforced disappearance. The war displaced more than a million Tamils to foreign countries.

The Tamils simply cannot live with the Sinhalese because Tamils cannot protect themselves from Sinhalese killings, rapes, abductions, pogroms, and deceitful policies.

There has been no justice as of yet for these Sinhalese criminals.

The Tamil diaspora kindly asks the IMF to only make the loan to Sri Lanka with the following two conditions:

  1. Disarm the Sinhalese army as was done to the military in Bosnia, and ask it to leave from the Tamil communities in the north-east.
  2. Have a meaningful discussion to protect the Tamils from Sri Lankan oppression. This protection can come about only through a political solution decided by a UN-monitored referendum.
